Imagine a day out at sea. Salty sea air fills your lungs, the ebb and flow of the ocean’s calm swell swaying the vessel, a never ending blue horizon off the deck, and just you and 4500 other sailors. That’s right; you’re on the USS Midway, the nation’s longest running aircraft carrier. Once the might of the US Naval fleet, the USS Midway has since been decommissioned and now serves as an amazing floating museum docked at San Diego’s embarcadero. Come take a look!

Start your discovery down fifty years of national history with an audio tour, free with admission. Listen to real Midway sailors guide you through over 60 exhibits through this floating city. And we really mean floating city. With 1500 telephones, a 3,200,000 gallon fuel tank, a kitchen that baked 1,000 loaves of bread every night, and washing machines that could hold 198 pounds of laundry a piece, this floating metropolis was built to carry thousands of sailors out to sea for months at a time. You’ll be amazed by the cramped sleeping quarters needed to fit all of those sailors on board.

But this ship had a greater purpose than just carting young men and women around the world. Marvel at the four-acre flight deck capable of catapulting jets to over a 100 mph for takeoff and let the massive guns and rocket-launching mechanisms wow you. Up close and personal, you will see first-hand the grand floating arm of the US Military.

For those with little skippers, make sure to try the all-new family audio tour! Families can follow Airman
Sam Rodriguez as they take youngsters on an amazing and entertaining audio tour to more than 30 locations throughout the aircraft carrier.

Besides the audio tour and the many exhibits, be sure to check out the many airplane specific features of this museum. The Midway proudly shows 25 meticulously restored aircrafts of the US Military right on the ship. Come see jets, planes, and helicopters from WWII to Dessert Storm all on display.
If it takes more than seeing to stoke your interest, take a seat in one of the three flight simulators for some reel excitement. Live the life of a true top gun– launch off the fight deck, engage the enemy, and land home safely. Take a daring mission through operation desert storm or join a copilot for a pulse-pounding combat. For full authenticity, take the 40-minute flight simulator that was used to train Vietnam-era pilots.

There is no better full picture of American military history than the USS Midway museum. The authenticity of walking in the steps of sailors on the actual ship full of uncompromising detail is amazing for the whole family.
Let the sailor’s voices guide you on the audio tour, as well as watching the volunteer veteran docents as they lead you through the specific details of each exhibit. There is a reason why most guests take three to four hours just to walk through this gigantic ship.
After a tour like that it’s time to refuel at the Fantail Café. Serving budget priced sandwiches and salads, as well as real grub from the ship’s own 1945 menu.
